This series of unique study guides and tests
is aimed at the teacher and student who wants to concentrate on the magnificent
work of poetry known as The Canterbury Tales.
Each installment in
the series examines an important story from the longer work by Chaucer, through a series of
interactive questions students must answer -- after they have thoroughly read the
work.
Each installment can be completed in a single class period, but
each can be used for make up tests, take home projects, or cooperative learning
assignments as well. Each installment has a series of 25 - 50 questions.
Student's grade is tracked on screen and the entire story is available for
scrolling. Each of the series installments is described below.
The Pardoner's Tale
The term "pardoner" referred to a person offering indulgences
officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. Indulgences were given in
exchange for money during corruption in the Middle Ages. The host invites the
Pardoner to tell the next tale. The Pardoner's Prologue is a sermon against
greed, gluttony and gambling, linking into the main tale. After the tale, the
Pardoner invites the other pilgrims to pay him for pardons and sell them relics.
We feature the The Pardoner's Tale in this
interactive Windows PC program, with
its insightfully ironic conclusion about what happens to people when they put material objects before people.
The program acts as a study guide
and/or test and can be completed in one class
session. Great for individual work, make up work,
testing, and cooperative learning classes. Especially great for the slow reader who
needs to focus on what he is
reading. Entire text of poem can be viewed on screen and immediate feedback
on answers is presented after each student response.

The Wife of Bath's Tale
"The Wife of Bath's Tale" is a tale from Geoffrey Chaucer's
Canterbury Tales. It gives insight into the role of women in the Late Middle
Ages and is probably of interest to Chaucer himself, for the character is one of
his most developed ones, with her prologue twice as long as her tale. He also
goes so far as to describe two sets of clothing for her in his General Prologue.
Like The Pardoner's
Tale,
this is an examination of the tale told by the Wife of Bath in The
Canterbury Tales. This program
also can be used as a study guide and/or test and can be completed in
one class
session. Great for individual work, make up work,
testing, and cooperative
learning classes. Especially great for the slow reader who
needs to focus on what he is
reading. Entire text of poem is available on screen and students are
provided with immediate feedback on
their answers.
