The Cay is a middle school level novel written by Theodore Taylor. The story is
based on a real incident recounted to Taylor. The novel was published in 1969.
The novel mainly discusses the relationship between Phillip and Timothy, and
Phillip’s efforts for survival on the forgotten island of Cay.
It shows how when Philip becomes blind, his blindness is a blessing in disguise
since he learns not to segregate between the White and Black people. The story
is an exciting, adventurous, suspenseful, emotional, believable, and compelling
story about Philip and Timothy. The author’s purpose in writing this story is to
show that all humanity is equal and needs to be color-blind to the color of
people skin.
The author showed the wonderful relationship between Philip and Timothy, which
was an example for all of us. We should not judge people by their skin color as
all mankind is created equal. Another purpose in writing this story is to show
that people are so dependent on each other for their needs. The author has
succeeded to demonstrate his point of view in his novel “The Cay”. (Wikipedia)
