Willa Cather
was born in Back Creek Valley. When she was nine years old her family moved to
a farm in Nebraska, known as settler country. It was here that she learned
about the immigrants from Europe who were setting up homesteads on the Great
Plains. Even though Cather was familiar with Pittsburgh and New York City, she
wrote mainly about farm people. These people constituted the background for
many of her novels and short stories. Her focus was on frontier life and the
American plains. It's probably safe to say that most people know Willa Cather
for her magnificent work of reminiscence, My Antonia, but it was also a
story that lauded the land of Nebraska and the immigrant pioneers.
