The Iliad is, together with the Odyssey, one of two ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer, traditionally accepted to be a blind Ionian poet. Most modern scholars consider the epics to be the oldest extant literature in the Greek language, dating to the 8th or 7th century BC, although the greater antiquity of Hesiod's works is argued by some scholars. The existence of a single author for the poems is disputed as the poems themselves show evidence of a long oral tradition and hence, multiple authors.

The poem concerns events during the tenth and final year in the siege of the city of Ilion, or Troy, by the Greeks. The word "Iliad" means "pertaining to Ilion", the city proper, as opposed to Troy, the state centered around Ilium, over which Priam reigned. The names "Ilium" and "Troy" are often used interchangeably.
