Charlotte Bronte was born in 1816.  Her father was Patrick Bronte.  Her mother died in 1821 and left five daughters and one son in the care of one Elizabeth Branwell.  The Lowood Institution in Jane Eyre was modeled after the school Charlotte and her sisters attended, the Clergy Daughters' School of Cowan Bridge.  After formal schooling Charlotte and her sisters continued their education at home.  This was how they managed to create the vivid stories they wrote.

Charlotte's second novel was the popular Jane Eyre, which was published by Smith, Elder Publishing Co.  Shortly after the publication of this novel Charlotte received much publicity and was invited to many literary circles.  Charlotte became well known in her day and is noted for her creating depth of feeling and realism, as reflected in her strong female protagonists.  Of all the sisters, Charlotte is considered to be the most talented and popular and Jane Eyre is considered one of her finest works.
