Lesson 2: Downloading, Saving, and Unzipping A File from the Internet
This step by step lesson accompanies an on-screen video available from
Baggetta_Ware Teacher Tech
www.baggetta.com. You can view the video first and then use these
instructions to practice the task.
Many websites that offer downloading of
software use WinZip to compress the files to be sent (especially if there is
more than one file that is included in the download). This is a compact way of
sending data over the internet and via email. You can download a trial version
of WinZip from
www.winzip.com to use to unpack files you download. Eventually, you will
probably want to own the program since it is so useful. You will need this to
download and unzip files you purchase on line from Baggetta_Ware.
You should also review our Lesson 1 on how to make a new folder on
your Windows Desktop. This is a good thing to learn because folders allow you a
place to download information off the internet, and they can be a great way of
organizing information you store on your computer. We will assume, for this
lesson, that you have already created a folder on the desktop called INTERNET
DOWNLOADS.
1. Use your browser to open the page on the website you want to download
your zipped file from. You can use our free software links (from the main page
on
www.baggetta.com) to practice the steps of this lesson. In reality, after
you purchase a product on line, you should be directed to a web page from which
you can download and save.
2. Left click on the download link and you will get a download dialog
box.
3. Click on SAVE from the download dialog box.
4. In the SAVE AS dialog that opens, navigate to the INTERNET DOWNLOADS folder on your Windows Desktop.
5. Click SAVE to store this .zip file in the folder. If it is a large file it might take some time to download – a phone line connection will seem like forever, but a cable connection to the internet is very speedy.
6. Once the download is complete, close down the Download Dialog (if it is still open) and the webpage you visited.
7. Open the INTERNET DOWNLOADS folder on the desktop and you should find the file you downloaded sitting there waiting to be operated on.
8. Now, RIGHT click on the .zip file and from the dropdown menu go to the WinZip option and on the resulting pop-out menu left click on Extract to here…
When you complete step 8 above you will see the compacted files unpack into the folder. With Baggetta_Ware products there is usually a set of files for setup – you will use setup.exe to install the program on your computer and a documentation file (usually and Adobe Reader file.pdf) for instructions. Other files might just have documentation files only, depending on the data you are downloading.
That’s all there is for this lesson. In the next lesson, we will take the setup.exe file and go through the steps of installing a Baggetta_Ware program on your Windows PC.
